Those were the times… I wish I’d have a big print of this :)
It’s John Blanche day today. I’ve decided. So here’s his seminal (and oft-reprinted, including in the most recent Space Marine Codex) Ultramarines image. The Medusan heraldry on the foreground marine is an excellent example of how Blanche approaches marines that doesn’t always seem to come across when shown as miniatures: every marine is a character.
It worked a lot easier in Rogue Trader and 2nd edition (and to some extent 3rd), due to Space Marine armies generally being smaller squad-sized, but now you can’t do that as easily thanks to huge armies being required, and that can be a lot of minis to paint!
Bigger armies do make for scary amounts of painting. I miss playing small skirmish battles.
Necromunda, GorkaMorka, Mordenheim come back! All is forgiven!
